What every awesome dad has mastered
This is another post in the That One Thing series for parents. Helping you understand the things dads do to be even more awesome and how to be a good father.
As moms, we often wish we can give our husbands’ just a bit of guidance on how to feel more comfortable being a dad. Not telling them how to be a good dad but simply helping them enjoy fatherhood more and trying to relieve the constant pressure they feel wanting to be perfect. Do you also sometimes feel this?
By no means do we think or feel we are better parents or have the ability to tell our partners how to be good fathers. But, in general, dads are less involved with the kids day-to-day running and often hard at work to support us financially.
And, I’m obviously not referring to the awesome homemaking dads who spend their days taking care of their kids … Those are one of a kind and a very special class of awesome dad …
However, even stay-at-home dads have similar needs and beliefs and we as moms can learn a lot from what they need by thinking about the building blocks we will discuss today. Understanding that one thing most dads need will help us support them and grow even stronger as fathers.

The R.E.S.P.E.C.T building blocks
- Respect for mom

- career Passion
- Emotionally involved
- Creative budgeting
- Taking care
Let’s discover the benefits of building on these aspects of how to be a good father and check out an easy action plan to strengthen these. You might want to have a look at this brilliant good dad guide …
Respect for mom
Dads who respect their wives are not only growing their marriage but also building strong family bonds, setting a good example for their kids and teaching them how to strengthen their own relationships in the future.
When kids learn from the respect their fathers show, they appreciate the value thereof. Teaching them to respect others also help them respect themselves.
life Entrepreneur
All dads are not business entrepreneurs. But, they need to be life entrepreneurs.
Wondering what a life entrepreneur is then?
In my opinion, a life entrepreneur is someone who creatively builds a life with passion and dedication. Doing so with what they have rather than longing for what they don’t.
Dads who are therefore life entrepreneurs teach their kids the importance of life goals, stimulates their creativity and boost productivity.
When parents are passionate about life, time management is improved and free time increased. This directly impacts the child’s life, allowing for more relaxed family time.
Why not, take some time out as a parent, and allow yourself time to think about how you can be more creative and innovative and create a better family life.
Self-belief
Believing in yourself, not only as a successful businessman but also as a father, is incredibly important. Do whatever you can to improve your parenting skills and learn to enjoy fatherhood.
This will not only make you happier as a person but also motivate you to be better and build your confidence. When you believe in yourself your kids will more easily trust you and have faith in you as a parent.

career Passion
Evidence has shown people who hate their jobs are unhappy, stressed and have a shorter life expectancy. Avoid this by choosing a job you love or when this is not possible, at least try to change your attitude by being more positive about it.
Parents going to work grumpy because they don’t enjoy it and then coming home even more grumpy after a day spent at a job they don’t like, are not fun … And, unfortunately, this rubs off on the kids.
Emotionally involved
Emotionally involved fathers lead by example and build trust and security within the family circle. When dads understand and appreciate emotional intelligence, they easily teach the skills to their kids and improve family communication.
The days of cowboys don’t cry are over … Embrace emotion and help your kids be smart with it.
Creative budgeting
Having a budget removes stress from the rest of your family, knowing exactly what they have to spend and allowing to save for specific events. When kids know and understand your financial situation it prevents a lot of arguments over what they can or can not have.
Teach them how to work with money, save money and plan for needs. This is a life long skill your kids will appreciate in the long term.
Taking care
Being involved in your family life and truly caring for each member is often overlooked by career-driven dads. Remember though that by being more involved your family bonds will be stronger, communication better and your kids will trust and appreciate you more.
Family stress is also easily reduced when dads are involved and actively taking part in family living. Give it a try.

Nice post! It will be interesting to see how many dads take you up on your Dad Challenge. I wrote an article for a parenting magazine on the importance of father-daughter relationships and how dads can help their little girls become happy, healthy, successful women. I learned so much in doing research for that article. Dads’ relationships with their children are even more critical than I realized! Thanks for providing such an actionable way for dads to connect with their partners and children!
Hi Trish, yes it’s a great topic and I hope it will help dads realize too how critical their relationships with their kids are and the impact they can have!
