Christmas Card Ideas
Christmas holidays are awesome. And doing fun stuff as a family even more awesome. Making DIY Christmas cards together is always high on our priority list and today we will share our best Christmas card ideas for this year.
We used to live in South Africa where Christmas is associated with hot sun, swim and barbeque.
We always thought snowmen and reindeer were quite strange Christmas ideas!
But now we live in Switzerland and we love to embrace the snow and winter holiday ideas.
And, therefore we share our Christmas snowman cards and three more Christmas tree cards made for our South African families!

Time to be Creative!
Making these DIY Christmas cards is super easy and fun.
And, there is only one Christmas card idea rule: There are no rules!
Everyone can color and embellish the way they want. This does not only nurture creative minds but also produce various translations of the same idea! The brilliant power of freestyle creativeness!
Snowman Christmas Cards
This DIY card is a perfect Christmas craft project for the kids. Depending on their age, you can help them cut the various pieces and then let them put everything together by themselves. Or, when they are old enough, let them do the cutting as well.
What you need
The best part is, you probably have most of the materials you need at home already. And, if you need some of the less common materials at an affordable price, just click the item in the list below to view options.
To help you source only the best quality products, I will recommend one product with each card. These recommended products I use myself and cannot imagine crafting without! And, I am sure you will love them just as much as me!
Hope this will help you source the best products to create your own Christmas cards.
- colored pencils
- these are still our favorite as they double for easy paint creations when brushed over with water
- googly plastic eyes
- pretty ribbon, colors of choice
- stickers and embellishments
- white cardstock
- colored cardstock
- textured paper
- colored buttons
- glue stick
My Product Recommendation Googly Eyes
This Christmas card only came alive after we added the googly plastic eyes! Yes, you can draw the eyes or add stickers. But, like with many other craft projects, the plastic eyes added another dimension and made the snowman card so much more special. Give it a try!
I always buy them in big amounts and in different sizes at a very affordable price, so we have them at hand for any project we are doing. You will enjoy having them at hand to create even more awesome art pieces.
Creating your Snowman
Fold white cardstock in half. You can use any size but standard A4 works well. Draw three circles from top to bottom, small to big, all touching sides. You can draw the circles by hand, trace from a round object or print them.
The next step is to cut around your circles’ outline. Make sure to leave the top part attached on the fold. See picture arrow below. Don’t cut through, otherwise, you will have two snowmen instead of an opening card!
Dressing and Decorating your Snowman
The suggestions below will guide you creating a beautiful card but do not be scared to add your own personal touches. And, give the kids free reign.
Remember No Rules!
Christmas Snowman Arms
Cut two arms with fingers from your textured stock. Glue to the back of your card, just above the middle of the second circle. Try them in different positions and at different angles for extra fun.
Christmas Snowman Hat
You can either cut the shape of a hat freehand or draw one with a pencil on the back of your colored stock of choice and then cut out.
Use your glue stick to attach the hat to the front of your snowman.
Place the hats on your cards at different angles to create cute variation.
Decorate your hat with feathers, embellishments, flowers or any decoration you prefer.
Top Tip
I always use a good quality pencil in a similar color to the stock card to add shadow and accentuate curves and lines. You will be amazed at the difference this small action makes to your final product.
Christmas Snowman Face
- Stick two googly eyes on the face.
- Use an orange stock card to cut a nose in a carrot shape and stick to the middle of the face. Highlight with an orange pencil.
- Optional: use a red pencil to draw a little smiley mouth. My kids said that a Christmas snowman has to be friendly and that’s why we drew the smileys!
Christmas Snowman Buttons and Scarf
No snowman is complete without a scarf and buttons!
- tie a short piece of colored ribbon around the neck
- add two or more fun buttons to the body.
Add a Christmas Message
Your Christmas Snowman card is now complete. Add a personal message inside and impress friend and family with your own DIY card.

Christmas Tree Card
This is another great card the kids can do by themselves.
What you need
- colored stock card
- strips of colored paper
- various colors, cut in half to one cm width strips of various lengths ranging from 2 to 7 cm
- we used gummed paper to make it even easier but standard paper and a glue stick gives the same effect
- stickers and embellishments
- card stock
My Product Recommendation Gummed Paper
I love gummed paper! We use it very often. For little hands, it is much easier to wet the back and stick, than to work with a glue stick. The kids also enjoy working with it. Few things are better than getting to wet paper with a finger! And, it comes in all different colors and sizes.
This is our favorite one. Check it out!
Creating your Christmas Tree card
Cut and fold cardstock to create a card with a size of your choice. The kids simply arranged the strips from bottom to top in decreasing size order to create a tree.
Place a wider piece at the bottom to create a bottom for your tree. Then stick your stickers and embellishments onto the tree.
We also added a colored stick to the top of the bottom piece to add an extra dimension.
Complete with a shiny star sticker at the top.
Your card is now ready for adding a personal message!

Modern Christmas Tree Card
While the kids were busy creating the Christmas Card Trees and Snowmen, I made some cards of my own. I love designs that are a bit less traditional and have some element of surprise. And, that is exactly why I love this one!
What you need
- silver cardstock, or any color of your choice
- embellishments and stickers
- thin black fine liner pen
- colored pencil in an accent color
My Product Recommendation Fine Liner Pens
The first thing I reach for when we start making is cards is my fine liner pens. You will love drawing with these pens! They are great to accentuate fine lines and add delicate touches.
You should try them in all colors and see why I use them all the time.
For these cards, I chose to use only silver and turquoise – my favorite color!
But you can make a similar card in rainbow colors, or any color of your choice, like this one, with red accents.

Create your modern Christmas Tree Card
Use your thin black pen to draw the Christmas tree freehand and embellish with gems and stars. As many or as little as you want!
With the colored pencil, I added small accent colors in a circular shape on the line.
Top Tip
Lightly pencil draw a triangle where you want your tree to be. Then do the doodle in the triangle to ensure a proper tree shape. I recommend you try doodle shape on a piece of paper before attempting it on your card.
The first one or two I drew, didn’t quite resemble a tree …
Modern Christmas Tree Card for Kids
My 7-year-old daughter loved my cards and wanted to make her own modern Christmas Tree card. We found this one and she loved it.
What you Need
- stickers and embellishments of choice
- card stock
- colored pencils
My Product Recommendation Coloring Pencils
We do a lot of arts and crafts. And, coloring is one of my kids’ favorite activities.
Do your kids also love coloring? Then the biggest favor you can do them is to keep a supply of bright, soft coloring pencils.
We love these pencils because they are not only great for coloring but with a water brush covering they create paintings! This is an absolute must-have for kids DIY.
And, if you are looking for beautiful coloring pics, then check out our own Magic Coloring Book! Hours of fun for the kids. We loved creating this special coloring book with all our own unique images, and you will love it too! Check it out now!
Creating your Christmas Tree
Making this card is super simple. My daughter drew an s-shaped outline in the middle of her card and then decorated the line with hearts and gem stickers.
Completed with a shiny star sticker at the top.
Card making doesn’t get much easier than this, and it looks stunning.
