When you do a proper detox, the change is often a shock to your body. To try and adapt to the sudden changes, your body might feel deprived resulting in fatigue and sugar and caffeine withdrawal symptoms.

So expect to possibly feel tired and irritated during the first 3 intensive body cleanse period days. This is called the keto-flu and can include flu-like symptoms like a headache, body aches and tiredness.

See these symptoms in a positive light though as it means that your body is in the transition to burning fat and cleansing itself. Exactly where you want to be!

You can limit a lot of these symptoms by already cutting down on caffeine and sugary food in the days before your detox. Then, during the detox, there aren’t so many changes to your body all at once.

Fortunately, these symptoms won’t last and will get better day by day. Just stick it out, after 3 days you will start feeling better.

By the end of the 7 days, your body and mind will be cleansed and you will feel revitalized, energized and happy with successfully completing the challenge.

Top Tip

  • Try to start your 7 day detox over a weekend, or on days without stressful events scheduled.
  • A Friday is recommended.
  • Being relaxed at home for the first couple of days will help your body cope with the change.
  • However, avoid lying on the couch thinking about things you would like to eat …
  • Rather play with the kids outside, go for a walk or do any relaxing non-strenuous activities.

  • Keep it controlled and choose better carbs.
  • Then, the cheat day will not affect your weight or health.
  • In fact, it will aid a positive mindset as continuous unmet cravings will merely make you depressed!
  • However, if you want some solid reasons why carb cheating is not the best option, read this.
4. Try out this superfood if you want to feel more relaxed, energized and healthy

7. When shopping for food, make it a habit to quickly check food labels.
  • Especially for the amount of sugar and carbs included.
  • To know if a product has too much sugar, just remember 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon of sugar …. Really want to buy that soft drink with 4 teaspoons of sugar …
  • Keep in mind that a healthy, active lifestyle should include about 50 grams of carbs per day. In other words, one chocolate bar that has on average 70 grams of carbs already exceeds your daily limit. So keep an eye on those labels.
8. Don`t fall into the trap of so-called low-carb products without making sure it is the correct one.
  • I couldn`t believe my eyes in the shop the other day. I wanted to buy almond milk, and the carb content of the different brands ranged per 100 ml from 0.5g to 75g! Unbelievable!
  • No use trying to limit carbs and then unknowingly adding a high-carb product to your meals.
9. Eat your last meal around seven to half past seven at night.
  • If you go to bed at ten, your body will have enough time to digest the meal.
10. To boost metabolism and strengthen your immune system drink a cup of ginger tea after dinner.
  • Ginger improves blood sugar
  • And has antioxidant benefits
  • The best way to prepare this tea is to add some freshly sliced ginger, water, and a tea bag and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • I recommend using rooibos tea, as it has no caffeine to interfere with your sleep.
11. Replace your morning coffee and milk with cinnamon tea
  • Simply prepare your favorite tea and add half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon or
  • Simmer teabag in water for 10 minutes with an added cinnamon stick.

Avocado Chicken Salad Ingredients

The ingredients listed below is enough to prepare the salad for a family of 4. I vary each ingredient portions per plate according to preference – Check out the top tip below for more detail.

  • 4 Grilled chicken breasts, cut into slices
  • 1 Cup Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 4 Cups Greens of choice
    • I like to use a combination of baby spinach, rocket and butter lettuce
  • 1 cup Berries
    • Our favorites include raspberries, blueberries and blackberries
  • 6 Ripe figs, peeled and halved
  • Half a cucumber, sliced
  • 1 to 2 Avocadoes, sliced
  • Half a cup of Cheese of your choice
    • Feta cheese
    • We sometimes add grilled halloumi to the avocado chicken salad for extra flavor

Avocado Chicken Salad Preparation

You can use left-over chicken breasts or grill some fresh. This is a great recipe for juicy grilled chicken breast and we also love making the Grilled Greek lemon chicken.

Preparing the avocado chicken salad is as easy as combining all the ingredients, starting with the greens at the bottom. And, ending with the cheese on the top.

Top Tip Preparation

I don`t measure out the amount of each ingredient. Knowing my family member`s preferences, I make the salad in each one`s plate directly.

By doing this I can decide how much of each ingredient to add to each plate. For example, my son loves tomatoes, so his plate will get an extra few. Whilst avo is my daughters favorite, I will add more for her.

By preparing the salad per plate, you can make sure that no salad is wasted and everyone has a salad made just for them! Empty plates guaranteed!

Frugal Meal Planning

I always plan a meal with chicken and vegetables whilst making sure there is enough chicken left over to make the avocado chicken salad the next day. Plan to have at least one chicken breast left over per person to create a nutritious salad.

And, the bonus is an avocado chicken salad dinner prepared within minutes the next day!

Top Tip Serving

For a beautiful looking salad leave the smallest ingredients to add last. Sprinkling the cheese on top make the salad look great!

If you are not following a low-carb meal plan, this salad is great served with freshly baked bread. Or when you do count the carbs, add a low-carb keto coconut bread.

You can make the dressing a day in advance for extra flavor. This salad dressing recipe is delicious with any green salad.

Mix together well
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon  red pesto
  • lemon juice from half a lemon
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, optional

  • Excess dressing can be stored and re-used.

We have tried many a different popcorn recipe, but this one remains one of our favorites! This popcorn recipe evolved from many different mix attempts. Resulting in the perfect super tasty popcorn mix combination.

Now, let’s share our super yummy sweet popcorn recipe. You and the kids are sure to LOVE this one!

The best part is, you can use any or all of the ingredients and replace it with any of your preferred choices. It will still be super yummy as the combination of the base ingredients is already a winner.

  • 1 cup of almond, walnuts, pecan nuts or any nut of your choice
  • 150g chocolate, white, milk or dark
  • And, then for the yummy bit
    Smarties, mini marshmallows, M&Ms, mini Easter eggs or any sweet chocolates or candies of your choice

Sweet Popcorn Recipe Steps

Prepare 1 packet of popcorn according to the instructions in the microwave, popcorn machine or stove top, and leave to cool.

Make movie night special with this yummy popcorn mix. www.HealthyFamilyandMe.comWhile waiting spread 1 cup of blanched almonds (or the nuts of your choice)  flat onto a baking sheet.

You can use any baking sheet, this is my favorite and very affordable baking sheet from Farberware. The non-stick covering ensures easy cleaning and even browning. My kitchen cannot run without this little beauty!

Roast the nuts in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 3 minutes or until golden brown, taking care not to burn. Roasted pecan nuts are a great alternative to the almonds. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

The next Sweet Popcorn Recipe Step

Make movie night special with this yummy popcorn mix. www.HealthyFamilyandMe.comMelt 150g of milk, dark or white chocolate in the microwave oven at a low temperature and set aside to cool.

A small glass bowl works well for me, just make sure that it is heat resistant. Pyrex bowls are always the best brand as it can go straight from the conventional or microwave oven to the dishwasher!

Flatten the cooled popcorn and nuts onto the roasting pan. Next, drizzle the melted chocolate over the spread popcorn and almonds.

I collated the various concerns into groups for kids- and parent-related worries. And where is the fun of reviewing lists if I can’t organize them into awesome acronyms! So here goes …

There are many worries we share concerning our kid’s behavior. Across various surveys, the parenting challenges voted most worrying here were sibling rivalry, public tantrums, bad language use and bullying.

Siblings fight. Period. This holds true in most families and there is no evidence to prove that it will soon change. But if we worry about our kids fighting and being in constant competition AND it is not about to change soon, then what?

We learn to handle it! We discover ways to be power parents armored with the tools and know-how of handling difficult family relationships.

Sure as the fact that siblings will rival, is the occurrence of public tantrums. At some point or another, kids will test out their tantrum skills. Much to the embarrassment and amazement of parents.

Again a good parent does not need to know how to avoid tantrums, however, they need the know-how to correctly handle it. Here are some great tips on taking back control during tantrum tirades.

Bad Language

Kids repeat things they hear. When babies start to talk, this is a great skill. Hearing them say mommy or daddy for the first time after you repeated it non-stop for days, is beyond special. A magic moment we all treasure!

However, hearing them repeat one of your swear words at the church group is not that special… The majority of kids using bad language heard it first at home and started to repeat it.

Whether parents at this point continue to use bad language or not does not have much of an impact on your kids’ future language use.

Why? Because they already believe that it is appropriate to use bad words since their role models, i.e. their parents, use it. And, secondly, they continue to hear it outside the home. So it has to be okay, right? This, in their minds, proves that bad language is acceptable. Oops… hearing your two-year-old use a swear word is all of a sudden not that cute anymore…

Getting to the stage where kids stay in their beds at night and sleep through is tricky. It usually tests our patience and willpower.

There are many different recommendations on how to get this right. But how do I know which one will work for me?

Every parent and every child is different and just because one parent firmly believes in the efficacy of a certain sleeping strategy for their child, does not mean it is going to work for you.

During a survey of more than 2,000 parents, the majority were worried whether they will be able to afford things their kids need. And the simple answer, applicable to most of us, is NO!

You can not possibly afford everything your kids needs or wants. And, you know what – that is perfectly fine!

You don’t need to buy kids all they need or want. Often it is very easy to make different plans to provide necessities and definitely luxuries. Be creative. Create games with everyday household items. Transform old clothes into fashionable new ones.

When you do spend money on toys, make sure they are educational and appropriate for your kids’ developmental stage.

As we can not change the fact that from time to time parenthood results in sleep deprivation, we can surely have strategies to limit the negative results thereof.

To share is to make joint use of something, or to partake in contributing to something, by a number of people. Whereas, Power is the striking ability to do or act.

Therefore, parenting power share can be defined as the marked ability to partake in daily activities, with decisive contribution from both parents and children.

In our day-to-day lives, sharing power with our kids will results in them actively partaking in happenings and decisions.

By allowing kids to make their own decisions from a young age on, they learn to be decisive and grow confident in their choices.

Of course, along with actions come responsibilities.  A lesson they need to learn early on.

By allowing power-sharing, power parents support their kids in acquiring the ability to be accountable for their actions.

For example, providing the opportunity to your kids to decide what they want to wear. Or, how they want to spend their pocket money.

It teaches independence.

They will learn that refusing to wear rain boots on a rainy day, results in icky, wet feet.

This discomfort will be way more effective in convincing them to make a better decision on the next rainy day.

Way more so than you yelling at them to not go out without wearing their rain boots …

Teaching kids by means of consequence experience is a very valuable power parenting method.

As parents, a lot of us are guilty of taking over an action rather than coaching our kids to do it themselves. It saves us time and effort hanging up a used towel.

Rather than trying to get your child back in the bathroom and showing him AGAIN how to do it.

But, this is, unfortunately, the wrong way to go about getting things done at home if you want to be a power parent.

The next time he will surely leave the towel on the floor again…  Knowing that you will be picking it up behind him.

Leaving the towel on the floor will be a more effective strategy than hanging it out yourself.

Finding a wet towel on the floor to use the next day, will definitely make him think twice about hanging it up. But, chances are he might leave it on the floor again soon…

So how does a power parent then handle this situation?
By offering support!

And, by not being a helicopter parent! Ask your child to hang the towel up, showing him how, again… and discuss the reasons for doing so.

And then, walk away trusting them to get it done without you hovering over them!

Understanding the reasons for a simple request as well as the consequences if not adhered to, will assist your child in making smarter decisions.

Allowing them to complete a task without you waiting around to make sure it gets done, instills trust.

Without trust, any parent-child relationship is doomed …

More examples are; when your child is not able to close his jacket zipper, teach him how, rather than pulling it up yourself.

Quickly helping your child eat is much easier than teaching him how to hold his fork properly. But unfortunately, this will not teach him the must needed new skill.

Resist the urge to complete tasks for them in order to save your own sanity…

Take the extra time, discuss the actions and get them involved. And then, trust them to do it!

Offering support rather than taking over is an action we all have to pay special attention to.

We complete tasks without even realizing it. My husband is so good at offering support. Watching him coach the kids to learn new skills made me realize the value of this small effort.

But like most moms, getting things done quicker used to be of more value to me. This was until I saw my kids displaying new skills.

Skills they did not learn from me but from my husband’s patient support offering.

Keep an eye out and find opportunities to offer support to your kids rather than taking over their tasks.

Allow them to learn from their own mistakes and thus thrive as assertive kids.

Knowing how to successfully educate your child every day will assist you further in offering much-needed support.

Power Parent Strategy 3

Kids are great at doing small jobs around the house. They can unpack the dishwasher and fold their clean clothes.

Teach them from young to help and make sure they know how much this means to you.

They will quickly learn that by doing a 5-minute job they not only make you happy but also gain an extra 5 minutes of your attention.

The value of welcoming effort lies not within the perfection of performance, but in the effort itself.

Willingness to help is way more valuable than the perfect ability to do things without the enthusiasm to volunteer contribution.

The action of welcoming effort rather than performance originates from creative freedom.

Allow your child the autonomy to express their own thoughts and feelings.

For example, never do crafts with a first prize result in mind. And, refrain from subduing creative minds by enforcing reality. Allow kids to express themselves, enjoy and discover the power of their own imagination.

Good parent-child communication can be challenging at times, but it is very important.

It impacts positively on our family life when effective. It benefits every other social interaction our children will have, be it with friends or the teacher at the school.

A child, and even more so, an adult who does not have the skills to listen and communicate effectively will never be able to stand his ground.

Nor would he be able to thrive in our communication driven world. A world filled with public speaking, social media, and complex relationships.

By acquiring effective communication skills from us, our children grow confident in speaking about their ideas and feelings, no matter the situation.

They will also appreciate the importance of listening when others are speaking and respect different views and opinions.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a great superfood that is not expensive and easy to find in local stores. It boosts cognitive function and stimulates memory.

My kids are always looking for something to snack on when they take a break from learning. Therefore, I make sure to fill an airtight glass jar with baked apple chips with a cinnamon sprinkle. This snack is not only healthy but will boost their brain function at the same time.

One of my favorite ways to increase their cinnamon intake is serving pancakes with cinnamon sugar. You will boost their immune systems further when replacing the oil in the recipe with coconut oil.

The combination of coconut oil and cinnamon ensures a double boost for better memory power as well as keeping them healthy. Breakfast will be super fun with these cinnamon sugar breakfast bunnies or scrumptious cinnamon vanilla baked French toast.

Walnuts

A great exam-time snack to keep the kids mentally alert is walnuts. Roast and lightly salt them and have kids grab and eat it in between studying sessions. If your kids don’t enjoy the taste of natural walnuts, you can add a bit of pizzazz by the Unsurpassed Superfood Power Seriesmaking a quick caramel sauce in a small saucepan with a spout on low heat and add a dash of cinnamon.

Tuna and Salmon

Memory retention is crucial during this time and there is no better way to enhance it than by adding fresh salmon and tuna, which are filled with omega-3-fatty acids. If your kids love sushi as much as mine, this is the time to spoil them.

Seared fresh salmon fillets are one of my favorite dinner options. It takes only 5 minutes to prepare. Heat a non-stick copper frying pan, add a teaspoon each of butter and olive oil, salt the salmon lightly and flash fry both sides for 2 minutes. Yes, I love easy!

My kids also enjoy these yummy tuna and potato cakes served with a tomato, avocado and celery salad.

Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the best superfoods to enhance memory as it is full of Vitamin C, Vitamin K and choline.

Even if your kids don’t enjoy their greens, this is a time where you should insist they eat it. It is very easy to disguise the greens in one of their favorite meals.

Any green leaf vegetable can be finely chopped and added to lasagna, soup or casseroles without them even knowing! You can have a look at this great post for inspiration on how to sneak veggies into meals. Another of my kids’ favorites is rainbow fritters, which I prepare by adding shredded broccoli and using wholewheat flour.

Avocado

Most kids love avocado and serving lots of it will help them concentrate and memorize better. Serve it in a salad, on sandwiches or as guacamole.

To really treat the kids serve the guacamole in the shape of a crocodile or inside a silly face bowl!

Saffron Spice

This might come as a bit of a surprise since saffron is not widely used. But it certainly should be as it has brilliant superfood power.

Saffron promotes learning and also ensures visual health for both kids and adults. The best way to ingest this valuable spice is adding small amounts to meals that the kids enjoy, like vegetable risotto and meatballs with saffron rice.

You will be amazed at the brilliant flavor saffron adds to your recipes. My kitchen is rarely without this awesome superfood stored in an airtight spice container to keep all the goodness locked inside.

Vanilla Milk

he Unsurpassed Superfood Power Series

Kids need mental alertness just as much as quality sleep. Make sure they get enough hours of sleep and try to enhance the quality by offering a glass of milk about 90 minutes before bedtime.

Milk contains high amounts of tryptophan necessary for sound sleep.

To flavor the milk and supercharge it with a mental boosting ingredient, warm the milk slowly with a vanilla pod. Slice the pod lengthwise carefully with a sharp paring knife to remove the seeds. Add the seeds and the pod to the milk and warm on low heat in a non-stick milk pan for about 5 minutes.

If preferred, add a small amount of sugar or honey. Just to make sure they drink every last drop, serve it in a magical rainbow color changing unicorn mug! They will sleep soundly and awake brightly!

Another easy way of adding vanilla is by serving a vanilla, coconut smoothie or homemade vanilla bean ice cream.
